An der Aa site
The ZVB wants to be the leading mobility provider in the Zug area not only today, but also tomorrow and beyond. That is why we are investing in a modern infrastructure. On the An der Aa site in Zug, a forward-looking overall project for public transport, the rescue service and new living space is being built. With the further development of the current operating site, we are securing the region's mobility and supply in the long term.
Building project
On the An der Aa site, modern bases are being built not only for public transport, but also for the Zug rescue service. In addition, around 160 flats, 40 % of which will be affordable, a neighbourhood square, new paths and natural space are being built.
New buildings for the ZVB and the RDZ
With the new main base of the ZVB, the buses will be parked underground in future. A modern workshop will be realised on the ground floor, with break rooms and offices on the upper floors. The second building will be home to the Zug Rescue Service (RDZ) and the cantonal administration. This new building will enable the rescue service to continue to fulfil its basic mission efficiently in the future as its needs grow. The proximity of the rescue service and the ZVB has proved its worth. The rescue vehicles are serviced and maintained at the ZVB. These synergies will be continued. In addition, modern office workplaces for around 250 employees will be created in the new building for the cantonal administration.
Opening up and upgrading the neighbourhood
The current closed site will be opened up and connected to the surrounding cycle and pedestrian paths. A new footpath will enable barrier-free crossing of the site and complete the footpath network between Stierenmarkt and Zug railway station. The current path on the Schleifen embankment will in future run as a footpath and cycle path on the An der Aa side of the site. The old Schleifen railway embankment will be secured as an ecologically biodiverse oasis, the Siehbach stream will be opened up and the roofs will be greened.
There are good reasons in favour of a new building. Some of our current buildings are over 60 years old and need to be modernised. We also need space, as we transport 50 per cent more passengers than we did 25 years ago - and the trend is rising. With the new workshop, alternative technologies can be efficiently maintained and new developments can be flexibly incorporated.
In spring 2019, the Cantonal Council gave the green light. The current project is convincing because it is balanced, well thought out and utilises synergies with other partners. We are also densifying in the right place: in future, buses will be parked underground. This will free up attractive space in the centre of Zug.
Living and living on the north building site
The northern part of the ZVB An der Aa site is being transformed into a lively urban neighbourhood with residential, service and commercial units. Zugerland Verkehrsbetriebe AG (ZVB) is ceding the vacant 8,400 m² site to the Zug Pension Fund, which was the winner of the public bidding process.
The project is based on the guiding principle of a diverse, lively urban neighbourhood in which living, meeting, working and services come together to form a coherent whole. The focus is on a sensible and balanced mix in which residential use plays a central role. According to the current planning status, at least 160 flats are expected. Additional office and service areas will be used where they are provided for under planning law or contribute to increasing the quality of living.
In the next step, the Zug Pension Fund will organise a study contract and further develop the project together with invited architectural firms. Construction is scheduled to start in 2031.
